This year’s Homecoming week was a time of fun and competition all centered around the theme, “Macon’s Got Game.”  To kick off the week, students gathered on the softball field Monday evening for a Kickball tournament.  Keeping the game theme all week, other events included Boy’s Volleyball, Dodgeball, and Ultimate Frisbee with a champion team being crowned each night.  The week’s school day dress-up themes featured a board game theme and included Guess Who? – twin day, The Game of Life – career day, and Jokers & Wild Cards – card game day.  To add to the excitement and spirit on campus, the varsity volleyball team hosted two Region matches and won both to once again advance to the state playoffs.  As Friday finally arrived, the students were all dressed in their Homecoming t-shirts and school colors.  At noon, the varsity and JV cheerleaders kicked off the celebration with their annual black light pep rally, entering the gym as glow stick figures and then changing into neon colors.  The annual upper school tailgate party was a time of good food and lots of fun with carnival and traditional tailgate games.  The lower school students joined in the fun this year with a tailgate of their own.  As the school day drew to a close, everyone gathered in the parking lot for the Homecoming Parade.  Each lower school class with the help of Art instructor, Tiffany Ala, had created a game themed banner to carry down the parade route.  The wee princess, little damsel, termite and pee wee cheerleaders along with the pee wee football team rode on floats and trailers throwing goodie bags to the crowd.  The Homecoming Attendants then made their way as they each were recognized – Rachel Major (7th grade), Mary Hunter Wright (8th grade), Kayla Boroff (9th grade), Annslie Gourlay and Bailey Williams (10th grade), Katie Jo Dickey, Hannah Johnson, and Jaycee Cook-McCollum (11th grade).  The 2016 Senior Attendants anxiously waiting to see who would be crowned at the game were – Sami Nesbitt, Kaylee Pullin, Rai Pritchett, and Sommer Sears.  The Macon East Knights kicked-off the big game against the Cornerstone Academy Chargers at 7:00 as students, fans, and alumni gathered for an evening of fun and reminiscing.  Special guests for the evening included the Class of 2006 celebrating their 10 year reunion.  At halftime all eyes were on the Homecoming Court as the attendants and their fathers made their way to the field.  Miss Sami Nesbitt was named the 2016 Homecoming Queen.  The Knights played an outstanding game but came up short falling to Cornerstone 22-19.  After the game, upper school students gathered on the baseball field as the Jay Williams Band played all their southern rock favorites.  The Student Government Association officers and members did an outstanding job planning and organizing all of this year’s Homecoming week activities.

The faculty and staff of Macon East are proud to recognize the following 7th grade students as Duke Talent Identification Program honorees ~ Hendley Culpepper, Jay Moore, McKinnon Hammonds, Trey Mathews, and Ali Churchwell. These students qualified for the Duke TIP program based on their outstanding performance on the ACT Aspire test. Duke TIP is a global leader in identifying academically gifted students and providing them with opportunities to support their development. As part of the talent search enrollment, Duke TIP registers eligible seventh graders to take either the ACT or SAT as an above-level test. This allows students to have greater insight into their abilities, and it gives them the opportunity to preview a college entrance exam.

Macon East lower school students enjoyed a visit today from the Pike Road Fire Department. Each year these volunteers visit MEA to teach the students about fire safety and prevention.  To show their appreciation for the firefighters, the students presented them with baskets of goodies to enjoy at the station.

The Macon East lower school hosted its annual Grandparents Day event on Thursday, October 6.  Students invited their grandparents to visit their school and share a special time together letting them know how much they are appreciated. Grandparents began arriving early at their special student’s classroom before lunch time. The students welcomed their grandparents to visit their classrooms, see projects they were working on and explore what they are learning.  The grandparents also received a special handmade gift.  Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by the Macon East lunchroom staff and served by the PTO.

The boys and girls in Mrs. Mills’ preschool class enjoyed a surprise visit from Johnny Appleseed.  He shared his story of how he traveled the frontier giving farmers small bags of apple seeds.  He wanted the farmers to have large apple orchards.  It was important to Johnny that all children enjoyed a good apple.  When it was time for him to leave he gave each child a red delicious apple.   Jackson Hicks, a senior at Macon East, helped out with this activity. Jackson has been a student at Macon East since Kindergarten.

All Macon East students joined together this morning to observe See You at the Pole. On this day students around the world will gather at their flagpoles, praying for their school, friends, families, churches, and communities. See You at the Pole is a day committed to global unity in Christ and prayer for your generation.

The Class of 2017 is excited to start a “Senior Buddies” program with the Kindergarten and 1st grade students. Last week the buddies met and shared information about themselves along with a snack and play time. The seniors look forward to participating in reading time, recess, and special events with their buddies throughout the school year.  The senior buddies will host a Popsicle Party for the kindergarten and 1st graders at the end of each 9 weeks to celebrate Report Card Day.  The senior buddies program was organized by Alex Wyrosdick along with class president, Bailey Tadlock.  It is their desire that Senior Buddies will become a long standing Macon tradition.

Mrs. York’s first graders are excited about their September harvest from the outdoor classroom which included peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, cucumbers, and okra.  Macon East is proud to be a member of the Alabama Wildlife Federation’s Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program.
