Dual Enrollment

Dual enrollment classes are available at Macon East Academy through any college that offers partnerships to take allowed courses. The two colleges that most of our current students attend are: Wallace Community College Selma (WCCS) and Auburn University’s Auburn First program.

The Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit for High School Students Program allows qualified students the opportunity to receive both high school credit and college credit. The program is restricted to qualified students in Alabama public and private high schools who have signed a working agreement with a partner college.

Important Information About Dual Enrollment

All students must meet the minimum GPA requirement to participate in dual enrollment. As required by statute, GPA’s will be verified every semester before a student is permitted to take classes in the dual enrollment program.

Students who take classes through the Dual Enrollment program are in actual college classes. They are not easier for Dual Enrollment students because the student is still in high school. The State of Alabama and the college’s accreditation agency require all students to be held to the same requirements. Dual Enrollment requires students to be self-motivated. College is a very different environment than high school.

Dual enrollment courses are weighted the same as AP and Honors courses in the high school record. Any core class is weighted as an AP and any elective course as an Honors class. Any course taken becomes a permanent part of the student’s academic record. If a student does not successfully complete their course(s) it could affect future financial aid eligibility. Students who earn an “F” or “FN” grade in a class are no longer eligible for dual enrollment.

Wallace Community College Selma

Our WCCS students are currently enrolled in various courses throughout their high school experience all while taking college courses as well. Typically, we suggest they start with HIS101 or ENG 101 as an independent study course during a specified classroom period.

Classes are done completely online with no actual classroom instruction done at Macon East Academy.  Mid-terms and Finals will be administered via the method of the instructor of the course. Students will know well in advance of testing dates via their Wallace instructor as well as the dual enrollment coordinator.

You MUST have at least a 3.0 GPA to enroll in dual enrollment classes. Students must make a minimum score on the Accuplacer placement test; or make at least a 19 on the English and 20 on the Math portions of the ACT to be allowed to register for English courses.

Students will be given a period dedicated to dual enrollment each day as a study hall class so they may have an opportunity to work on assignments during school hours, but all due dates are ultimately the responsibility of the student. A working, reliable internet connection at home is required for students to be able to work on assignments at home.

Auburn University Auburn First Dual Enrollment Program

Macon East Academy has entered into an agreement with Auburn University’s Auburn First dual enrollment program. Auburn First is a new program through the college which can offer some advantages to students who are planning on attending Auburn after graduation. Alabama residents who earn at least 6 credit hours of approved coursework and maintain a 3.0 cumulative Auburn GPA by August 15 of their senior year qualify for automatic admission to Auburn University. This can be valuable for students who tend to excel academically but fall short of the ACT requirements for admission. If you do not plan to attend Auburn University, your dual enrolled credits remain on your transcript and may transfer to another institution. The memorandum of understanding that we have signed with the school will also give the students credit for a high school elective just as our current dual enrollment program does.

To qualify for Auburn First, students need to be enrolled in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade, have a 3.0 or better GPA and counselor approval to enter into the program.

The costs for the program include:
• $550 per course
• A $50 application fee is due at the time of application to Auburn First
• A $250 enrollment deposit is due upon acceptance. The deposit will be applied to your tuition.
• Students are responsible for the cost of course materials and proctoring services which vary by course.

Students who complete 12 credit hours of Auburn First courses by December 15 of their senior year of high school and maintain a 3.4 GPA will qualify for an Auburn First Cord of Distinction. An Auburn representative will attend your high school awards ceremony to present the “Cord of Distinction” to eligible students. This prestigious award will recognize students hard work during their time in high school and the Auburn First program.
