History of Macon East Academy
Early in the spring of 1995, with a declining school enrollment, the Foundation Membership, Administration, and Board of Trustees of Macon Academy made an official decision to relocate Macon Academy from Tuskegee, Alabama to an area in east Montgomery County near the community of Cecil, Alabama. Many of the Macon County families were in favor of this move because there seemed to be no way to continue the institution at that location.
When the doors of Macon Academy in Tuskegee, were finally closed, there were 62 students enrolled in the school. Approximately 45 of those made a commitment to attend the new school that would open under a new name, Macon-East Montgomery Academy. Transition of events during the first summer of the re-location effort was astounding. The administration and the entire Macon family worked from daylight to dark, with meetings almost every night. The decision to relocate began to show promising results through the persistent and dedicated efforts of a small group of supporters as the people in Montgomery County began to respond and show interest in the new school.
Macon-East Montgomery Academy officially opened its doors for operation with 125 students in September of 1995. In the last two weeks before school opened, the enrollment had jumped from 77 to 125 students; a clear sign that growth would come.
This school has accepted the challenges that come with beginning again and has overcome many problems and obstacles in the on-going effort to establish Macon-East Montgomery Academy as a true college preparatory school. In July 2011, the Board of Trustees approved a name change to Macon East Academy. The school is now in its twenty-seventh year of operation with an enrollment of approximately 260 students and a faculty/staff of thirty-three, and school has received multiple certifications and/or accreditations from both state and regional organizations.
