MEA Alum Signs with the NFL

The Macon East annual art show, held March 13, was full of amazing pieces by students in all grades. Art Instructor, Tiffany Ala does a fabulous job teaching different techniques and concepts to students from Kindergarten through Art II & III for high school students. With works submitted in the areas of painting, water base, print making, color and non-color drawing, collage and mixed media, and photography the show offered a variety of visual arts from all skill levels. Taking home Best of Show honors in each age category were Warren Grier (K5-1st), Bentley Graham (2nd-3rd), Jacob Grindle (4th-6th), Luke Noffsinger (7th-9th), and Haley Wren (10th-12th). All first and second place winners at the MEA Art Show advanced to the AISA District Art Show on April 18. Macon East artists brought home 21 ribbons total. Eighth grader, Luke Noffsinger and freshman, Harris Hicks both were awarded 1st place at District. Five works of art from MEA were presented in the AISA State Art Show at Faulkner University on April 27. Harris Hicks’ mixed media/collage entry took 1st place in the 7th-9th grade division, and Haley Wren received 2nd place for her painting in the 10th-12th grade division. Congratulations to all of our outstanding artists and Mrs. Ala.
You are 565 yards away, wind is blowing 20 mph from right to left and you are trying to hit a ball into a two-inch hole. Golf is not necessarily a game of strength, but a game of skill requiring hours upon hours of mundane practice all year long to achieve the level of skill required to compete at the highest level. Bryson O’Malley (Senior) and Bishop Stringer (Sophomore) have made that commitment over the past five years and have both received the highest golf honor bestowed by the AISA, making the State Golf All-Tournament Team. Six players are chosen from the state of Alabama and Macon East Academy has two of them! Bryson finished his final high school tournament in 5th place shooting 77 on day 1 and rallying with an amazing 68 on day 2. Bishop, with a 71 on day 1 and 76 on day 2, finished State in the 6th position.
This year was a great season for Bryson and Bishop. Between them they had one victory, Bishop Stringer at Greenville Country Club, with Bryson finishing in second place. Bryson finished the year without a tournament outside of a top 10 finish and had a startling 6 second place finishes! Besides his victory at the Fort Dale Tournament, Bishop finished in the top 10 in all but two tournaments! Bishop, is by far the best young golfer in the AISA and the favorite going into next year’s season.
“I’m so proud of the individual effort these two boys displayed over the past few years. Hours of individual practice and a commitment to be the best. However, I’m even more proud of their academic standing, all while missing countless hours of class! Our golf team owes a special thanks to all the teachers who work with our boys before and after school to keep them caught up. Without their support and willingness to go above and beyond for us, we would not be able to compete in as many tournaments as we do. Thanks to all of you!” Coach Mike O’Malley said. “Macon East should be proud of their accomplishments. One third of the All State Team is from Macon East Academy and 100% of our golf team made All State! Not bad at all.”
This was Bryson’s second year making the AISA All State Tournament Team and Bishop’s first. The two will continue to compete in tournaments this summer throughout the southeastern United States. Bryson has been recruited by over 30 universities to play golf the next four years but has chosen to attend Ole Miss on an academic scholarship and continue his junior career through other means. “I had a choice to make, play golf or go to school where I wanted to go. My education trumped my love for the game, however I may try and walk on at Ole Miss. Who knows?” Bryson said. “I can’t wait to see what Bishop does! He is one of my closest friends and he can play! Sky is the limit for him!”
In a game that requires participants to call penalties on themselves, Macon East should take pride in knowing Bryson and Bishop represented our core values as a school first and competed at the highest level second. Congratulations on a great year!
The Macon East economics class competed in the Spring Stock Market Game with one team placing in the top ten in the South Region. With 490 teams from the region participating in this semester’s game Jacob Cannon, Hannah Johnson, Travis Moody, and Kellen Ward’s team placed 6th! Coach Davenport finished first as advisor in the South Region, and the six teams representing Macon East finished 1st overall. Only three of the competing schools finished with a positive amount of money at the end of the game, and Macon East was #1 with a total of $100.968.49 and a 4.7999 percent return rate. This is a great real life application learning experience for the economics students.
Macon East recently recognized the senior athletes participating in spring sports. The golf team’s Bryson O’Malley is a 15 year student at Macon East and will attend Ole Miss in the fall. He and his father Mike O’Malley have led the golf team for several years. The softball team’s only senior player, Madison McKee is a 2 year student at Macon East and will continue her athletic career next year for the Faulkner Eagles. The Lady Knights have had another outstanding season and will vie to recapture the state title again this season. The Knights varsity baseball team recognized nine seniors who have led the team to another winning season and a bye through the first round of playoffs. The team is seeking a repeat as the AISA AA state title holder. Seniors include Parker Agnew, Drew Baker, Dawson Bell, Nick Fitzgerald, KC House, Jalen Howard, Blake Padgett, Wesley Pugh, and Kellen Ward. Baker will continue his baseball career at Chipola College in the 2019 season. The soccer program honored six seniors from the girls and boys varsity teams. Hannah Johnson, Colin Harris, Travis Moody, and Jackson Vinson have been integral in building the Knights program, while Bailey Dees and Taylor Watkins joined the Lady Knights team this year. The Soccer teams both made it to the playoffs again this year and ended their season at Tuscaloosa Academy. Macon East is proud to recognize the accomplishments of these seniors on and off the field.

The Junior/Senior Prom was held Friday, April 13 at the RSA Plaza Terrace. With the theme “Night of a Thousand Lights,” the junior prom committee transformed the venue for a beautiful evening honoring the Class of 2018. At lead outs, each of the seniors were recognized along with their dates and escorts. The juniors and seniors met at the Hampstead Bocce Court Pavilion before the prom for photographs to capture the special occasion. Many thanks to Mrs. Karen Harris, Anne Auston Wright (committee chair), and all of the prom committee for their hard work and fundraising that went into making this year’s Prom a success.
Macon East lower school students have kicked off a new outdoor classroom science project called Tomatosphere. The Tomatosphere seeds planted as part of the Environmental Fair include “control” seeds that are natural, untreated earth bound seeds, as well as “space” seeds that spent four weeks on the International Space Station in 2017. These seeds were transported to space on the SpaceX CRS-11 Dragon! The H9748 seeds are a hybrid variety provided by the Kraft Heinz Company. Mrs. Susan York and Mrs. Sharon Harper, both former teachers at Macon East and instrumental in starting our outdoor science classroom, were on hand at the Fair to help plant the seeds. Each class planted seeds in peat pots and will chart the germination and growth as they provide the optimal temperature, soil and water conditions for their seeds. Results of the Tomatosphere project will be submitted to First The Seed Foundation in Alexandria, VA. The identity of the “space” seeds will be revealed at the end of the experiment, once the plants have germinated and results have been submitted. After just one week, the students are enjoying watching the progress of their tomatoes.
Macon East students enjoyed the annual Environmental fair that was held on Thursday, April 12. Lower School students enjoyed learning about animals and their habitats, caring for pets, robotics, the importance of our soil and water, disaster preparedness, recycling to keep our state free of litter, electrical safety, and engineering and groundwater issues. Students enjoyed a picnic lunch outside and some fun activities including Casting Kids and Archery. Our Environmental Fair would not be possible without the many parent and area organizations that volunteer their time for this event.
