Lower School Students Spread Christmas Cheer

To celebrate the Christmas season, Macon East lower school classes have participated in various charitable service projects as well as random acts of kindness around school campus. The entire lower school participated in the food drive, while the 1st graders collected much needed items for the Montgomery Humane Shelter. The 2nd and 4th grades donated pajamas and books for children through the Family Sunshine Center. Sixth grade and first grade worked together to collect pre-loved coats and gloves for those in need. Shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse were filled by K3 and K4 students. Toys were donated to the Montgomery Baptist Association Toy Drive by the 3rd and 5th graders. It is so exciting to see the students at Macon East learn that the real joy of Christmas comes from giving to others.

Spreading cheer around campus Mrs. Mills’ Pre-K students decorated the school office for the holidays, and the Kindergarten class sang carols and colored pictures for a special school helper. Our school janitors received thank you notes from the 1st grade, and the 2nd grade went caroling to the other classrooms. Third grade created a Christmas banner to hang in the multi-purpose room with our 10 foot live Christmas tree. All the classes received candy cane gifts from the 4th grade, and the 5th grade decorated cookies for the school staff. Mrs. Walters’ 6th grade class wrote letters to soldiers who won’t be with their families for Christmas thanking them for their service to our country. Macon East lower school teachers and students enjoyed sharing the true spirit of Christmas throughout the month of December.

Christmas Play

Each year Macon East lower school students present a Christmas program for their parents, grandparents, and other guests. Music instructor, Michelle Lott accompanied the students in a performance of secular and sacred Christmas favorites. The theme was Follow the Star, directing us to focus our attention on the Star that lead the shepherds and wise men of old to the true reason for Christmas – the baby Jesus. All students in grades K3 through 6th participated in the performance. Songs included Away in a Manger, Silent Night, A Little Child Will Come To Lead Us, Follow the Star, Go Tell It on the Mountain, and Joy to the World. Following the play, each class celebrated the upcoming holiday with a Christmas party.

Space Camp

The 5th and 6th grade students traveled to Huntsville on December 11 to participate in the Astrotrek Ultimate Experience at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. The group was busy from the very moment they got off the school bus. First, they went to ride the two outdoor simulators- the Space Shot and the G Force. Both of these allow you to feel what happens in a no gravity atmosphere. They got to see a hands on presentation about the Space Station and climb the Mars Wall. Students visited a new exhibit called Science Fiction, then went to the Imax theatre and watched a great movie about the possibility of visiting Mars. In the new Davidson building, where the building is literally built around a Saturn 5 rocket, the group learned about the history of rocketry. A highlight of the trip was building parachutes in the science lab and applying the concepts of force and drag learned in the classroom.
