Fifteen Macon East drama students were recently inducted into a newly formed chapter of the International Thespian Society.  The Educational Theatre Association’s student honorary society recognizes high school students who have shown a commitment to theatre.  Eligible students earn points for acting, set design, costume design, lighting and sound.  ITS members must be part of at least two theatre productions or competitions, and complete at least 1,000 hours of work through practice, set construction, or other areas that contribute to the production of theatrical performances or competitions.  These students are active members of MEA’s Drama Club participating in the annual cabaret and spring play, as well as district and state AISA drama competitions.

Macon East students participated again this year in the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Shamrock Campaign. The MDA Shamrocks campaign raises funds for research and support programs to help people with muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and other diseases that severely weaken muscle strength and mobility. The Camelot Clubs and lower school classes partnered to sell the $1 green and $5 gold shamrocks with a goal of raising $800, the cost of sending one child to MDA summer camp. Macon East students exceeded this goal raising $1,025! Club Humility and Mrs. Marjory Johnson’s 4th grade class led the fundraising effort collecting $379. On behalf of Macon East, thank you to everyone who supported the MDA Shamrock campaign.

The Macon East chapter of the National Junior Honor Society recently held its annual induction ceremony. The National Junior Honor Society is a worldwide organization that consists of middle school & junior high students from around the country. Selection of members is based on five criteria: citizenship, service, leadership, scholarship and character. Each member is expected to maintain a high academic standard while being active in their community through volunteer service projects. The goal of NJHS is to recognize academic achievement and to develop the characteristics of leadership and service.

Grace Allen was selected as one of five area recipients for this year’s Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest, created in 1934, is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. This award recognizes individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. These students are selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree. Grace was honored to attend this year’s luncheon at the Montgomery Country Club and be recognized by the Montgomery Chapter of DAR for her achievements.

Macon East held its annual Science Fair in early February. Each student in grades 4-6 submitted a research paper, project board, and experiment in either the biological or physical science categories. First place winners, Jameson Byrom, Gavin Justice, Trey Matthews, Kacy Rutland, Parker Strickland, and Lucy Taylor advanced to the AISA District fair at Chattahoochee Valley Community College. Four Macon East students received medals at district and advanced to the state competition. The AISA State Science Fair took place February 25 at Huntingdon College. Each participant stood nervously with their project and gave an oral presentation to the judges. Macon East was proud to receive the first place award in both the biological and physical science categories. Jameson Byrom’s entry “The Eyes Taste It,” proved how the color of food affects a person’s perception of taste and was the overall 1st place winner in the biological category. Taking 1st place in physical science, sixth grader Trey Matthews’ project “Non-Newtonian Fluids” proved how non-Newtonian fluids change viscosity when a force is applied. We are extremely proud of all the students who participated in this year’s science fair, and honored to have both 1st place state winners at MEA.

Each year Macon East art students from grades K5 through 12 participate in the school art show displaying their best works from the year under the instruction of art teacher, Tiffany Ala. Entries in collage/mixed media, drawing (black/white and color), painting, photography, printmaking, and water base are judged by an independent panel of local artists in five grade categories. Senior, Christian Steyer was the overall Best of Show winner sweeping the black and white category with four ribbons and taking 1st place in painting. An exceptionally talented artist, Christian will be attending Savannah College of Art and Design in the fall. Other Best of Show winners were:

MEA Art Show Winners

All first and second place winners from the local show advanced to participate at the District level competition. Macon East had 22 winners receiving 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and honorable mention ribbons at the AISA District show held March 30 at Lee-Scott Academy. The first and second place winners that will move on to the AISA State Art Show April 22nd at Faulkner University are listed below.
