Billups Named AISA Player of the Year

Artavious Billups was honored to be selected as the AISA Boys Basketball Player of the Year at a recent banquet.  He became the first Macon East player to win a major state basketball award, but he hopes he’s just started a trend.  Although Artavious was new to Macon East this year, the senior guard had a huge impact on the basketball program under the leadership of Coaches Larry Chapman and Lincoln Glass.  Receiving all tournament nods and MVP honors at every tournament this season, including the state finals, Artavious led the Knights in scoring and represented Macon East in the AISA All-Star game and was named AISA All-Metro player of the year.  The addition of Billups to the squad and his 18.5 points per game average definitely contributed to the Knights 33-0 perfect season.  Artavious plans to continue his basketball career at the collegiate level but has not yet announced his plans.  We congratulate Artavious on his selection as the AISA State Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

Tyler Watson Attends Youth Tour

Tyler Watson, a Macon East junior, was selected to attend the Montgomery Youth Tour March 7-9.  Tyler was one of 8 area high school juniors representing Dixie Electric Cooperative.  Their group along with 155 other students from Alabama met at the Renaissance Hotel and learned how cooperatives work, about the legislative process, and the history of Alabama. They also toured many historic sites in downtown Montgomery, met their state representatives, and heard from motivational speaker Cea Cohen-Elliott.

Tyler was also selected to represent Alabama at the Washington Youth Tour the week of June 9-15, 2017. This event brings together more than 1,600 high school students from rural areas and small towns across the U.S. to Washington, D.C. to tour various sites and meet members of the legislature. The tour is sponsored by the National Rural Electric Association for the purpose of having students gain personal knowledge of American history, learn about the political process, and interact with elected officials.  Tyler is a remarkable student at Macon East and well deserving of this honor.

Let’s Pretend Hospital

Mrs. York’s class recently attended Baptist Health’s “Let’s Pretend Hospital.”  The annual Let’s Pretend Hospital allows local first-graders to tour a make-believe hospital so they will be less anxious if they ever need actual hospital care.  The program strives to teach children “what they can expect during a hospital visit and minimize fear and anxiety associated with hospitalization.”  Let’s Pretend Hospital also gives nursing students an opportunity to put their medical knowledge to use by teaching kids about nursing and health care.  The virtual hospital includes an emergency room, X-Ray and laboratory area, operating room, patient room and pediatric playroom.  Macon East students always enjoy the opportunity to role play as the patient, doctor, and nurse at the Let’s Pretend Hospital.
