Macon East sophomore, Rachel Sargent was honored to be selected to attend the University of Alabama’s Capstone Leadership Academy on March 1st and 2nd.  The 150 attendees from all over Alabama participated in leadership training, group activities, and heard from several motivational speakers.  The theme of the two day leadership conference was “Vision, Value, and Voice.”  Rachel said she really enjoyed the speakers and making friends with other sophomore leaders from Alabama high schools.  Rachel was chosen to apply for the prestigious Capstone Leadership Academy by her teachers and selected to attend after submitting an essay application to the Capstone Council.  The purpose of the two-day event is to give students the tools and the training to apply their leadership skills to opportunities in their own communities.

Each year Macon East fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students participate in the Science Fair.  With entries in either the biological or physical category, each student is required to present a project complete with display board, research paper and experiment results.  The fair is judged by a panel of experts, and the top projects advance to the AISA District and State Science Fairs.  This year 3 MEA students were honored at District and advanced to the State fair – Luke Stabler (“Hand Washing” 1st), Colton Lunn (“Diaper Dynamics” 2nd), Elizabeth Kirk, (“How Much Will Your Boat Float” 3rd).  The following 1st place winners at the MEA fair also participated at the District event – Sara Cochran, Pressley Graham, and Thaddeus McKinney.

Ms. Ellen Lawrence’s K5 class at Macon East Academy has been learning about the importance of kindness by practicing giving compliments to others.  The class has been using their Amazon Echo to listen to examples of compliments and discuss how compliments make others feel. Room mother, Mrs. Amy Redoble, recently visited her daughter Abigail and classmates and directed an activity in which each student picked a classmate’s name and thought of a compliment for that friend, then wrote it on a colorful heart.  The students revealed their hearts and shared the compliments for their friends.  The hearts were connected with the addition of a head to make a “Compliment Caterpillar”.  The completed project was displayed in the hallway for others to enjoy reading and perhaps pass on a kindness of their own.

The Kindergarten through Sixth grade classes visited Wesley Gardens Assisted Living on February 15 where they sang some of their favorite chapel songs and recited Bible verses about love.  The students presented residents with Valentine cards, heart-shaped cookies, and gift bags.  The students were so happy to take their message of love and caring to the residents and staff at Wesley Gardens.  The retirees and students alike were blessed by their time spent visiting and exchanging hugs.

Macon East senior, Tyler Watson was selected as a 2018 recipient of the DAR Good Citizen award from Montgomery’s Anne Phillips Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest, created in 1934, is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.  This award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. These students are selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree.  Tyler is an outstanding academic student, two sport athlete, and serves as an officer and member in several school organizations.  Tyler was honored as one of four Montgomery area award recipients during a luncheon at the Montgomery Country Club.

Macon East recently competed in the middle school and high school divisions of the AISA Scholars Bowl hosted by Chambers Academy. The middle school Scholars Bowl team finished in 2nd place at the District competition with McKinnon Hammonds as the team high scorer.  Tyler Watson led the high school team as high scorer for an overall 5th place team finish at the District competition.
