Each of us remember the days of competing in the annual spelling bee and all the nerves, practice bees in class, and that one letter that meant you were moving on or taking a seat. Fortunately, the tradition of a spelling bee lives on, however, I think the words are a bit more difficult than in the past. Macon East students in 4th-8th grade compete in a grade level bee with the winners advancing to the AISA District and State competitions. This year Mason Humphries (4), Katie Kitchens (5), Kaiden Byrom (6), Ryan Russell (7), and Ali Churchwell (8) won their grade level spelling bee and competed at District. Kaiden Byrom and Katie Kitchens, taking 1st place at District, advanced to the AISA State Spelling Bee where Kaiden Byrom was the 1st place State winner in the 6th grade division.
Macon East’s PTO partnered again this year with Boosterthon Fun Run for their annual fundraiser. The Boosterthon mission is to incorporate character training, physical fitness, and a fundraising program that allows the students, not the parents, to do the fundraising. This year the Boosterthon theme was Castle Quest, an English castle theme all about bravery. Students learned the six virtues of a “true hero” – focus, self-awarenesss, respect, trustworthiness, and creativity throughout the week leading up to the big event as they got pledges from family and friends. As always, the Fun Run event was full of excitement, music, lights and lots of fun. The PTO set a fundraising goal of $5,000, and thanks to the hard work of our students, parents, and teachers, the PTO exceeded the goal by $2,000. Money raised will be used to upgrade the sound system in the cafetorium which is used by the entire school for a variety of school events. Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Fun Run and contributed to its success.
The varsity boys basketball team may have lost some key players from last year and 2 games early in the season, but they worked through it and came out on top again as the 2018 AISA AA State Champions bringing the coveted trophy back to Macon East. Senior point guard Kyle Edwards, senior center Logan Goree, and sophomore guard Mike Murry led the team all season with a flair that has become synonymous with Chapman’s basketball program. In the final game of the season, the Knights easily defeated Escambia 67-40 in a 31 game winning streak. Macon East has won 66 of 68 basketball games in last year’s undefeated run and this year’s 33-2 season. With 27 points in the championship game, Goree was named to the all-tournament team and the AISA all-star team. Edwards, known by the coaches as the “Little Magician,” took home MVP honors and a spot on the all-star team with 12 points and his ability to control the Knights offense and flow of the game. Murry rounded out the all-tournament team with 13 points. The Knights will lose 3 seniors in 2018 including Tyler Watson, Logan Goree, and Kyle Edwards. With a line up of juniors and a sophomore bench who got substantial time on the court this season, the Knights varsity squad promises to be a contender for the title in 2019.
Each year Macon East fifth grade students participate in the D.A.R.E. program in partnership with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department. Drug Abuse Resistance Education is an education program that seeks to prevent use of controlled drugs, membership in gangs, and violent behavior. Corporal Kofee Anderson has led our D.A.R.E. program for many years and established a great relationship with the Macon East students. His kindness and encouragement makes the students want to do their best and make good choices. At the end of the of the program, each student writes an essay about what they learned and how they will apply it in their life. This year’s D.A.R.E. essay winners are Elizabeth Kirk and Hunter Wren. Bailey Cunningham received the most improved award, and Tiffany Marshall was honored as overall best student.
Macon East junior, Madisyn Kennedy surpassed 1,000 career points this season for the Lady Knights basketball team. An all star athlete in volleyball, basketball, and softball, Madisyn always gives 100% when it comes to sports and academics. Madisyn is committed to join the Mississippi State Bulldogs softball team in the fall of 2019, but will continue to lead the Lady Knights athletic program for one more year. Congratulations Madisyn on setting an outstanding career benchmark!
Macon East high school students participated for the first time this year at Model UN. Model United Nations is an educational simulation and academic activity in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. Model UN involves and teaches participants researching, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities. Team members Hannah Johnson, Travis Moody, Bailey Nyberg, Bryson O’Malley and Kellen Ward enjoyed the two day event held at Loveless Academic Magnet Program High School with senior Kellen Ward receiving an honorable mention award.
Macon East senior, Madison McKee signed to play softball next year with the Faulkner University Eagles. Madison transferred to MEA last year from Wetumpka High School and also plays with Bama Xtreme Fastpitch. Madison is a dynamic player at 3rd base and behind the plate, and as the only senior on the 2018 team, she is a major part of the Lady Knights’ program this spring as they seek to reclaim the AISA AA state title.
The AISA AA State Volleyball Champions received their state rings following an exciting 32-3 season. With a new coach, Codi Moon, and a loss to Coosa Valley in last year’s title game, the team was determined to work hard and reclaim the state title after a crushing end to their 5 year reign. With the 3 losses coming early in the season, the Lady Knights worked hard on and off the court to land in the final match of the year with rival school, Glenwood. In just 3 sets, the team defeated Glenwood and once again won the state championship, and these rings are proof that their grit and determination paid off.
Macon East students always look forward to sharing with others throughout the month of December. The lower school and junior high classes worked together on a variety of service projects including coats and gloves for area homeless, pet supplies for the Montgomery Humane Shelter, Scholastic Book Clubs’ book and pajama drive, and Heritage Baptist Church’s toy drive for local families in need. Pictured below are a group of 6th grade students delivering a trailer full of non-perishable food items collected by the entire lower school to WSFA and Dixie Electric’s 12s Day of Giving. Also pictured are the K3 and K4 classes with pajamas for the pajama drive as they enjoyed their own Pajama Day at school.
