Community Service Projects at Macon East

Macon East Academy’s SGA strives to make a difference and help those in need.  During the months of November and December, the school participated in Dixie Electric’s Food Drive during the 12s Day of Giving and collected over 1,200 items for the Montgomery Area Food Bank. Macon East lower school through 8th grade also joined together for their Christmas service project to collect Christmas gifts for Heart to Heart, a local foster care ministry.  The Montgomery Humane Society benefitted from the 9th and 10th grade classes donating much needed supplies.  11th and 12th grades focused on Mid-Alabama Coalition for the Homeless donating cold weather jackets and gloves.  Community involvement is very important for all students at Macon East.

Mother’s Day Out Fun!

Macon East’s Mother’s Day Out students are counting down the days until Christmas and they have been busy with many Christmas activities. From reviewing our academic skills using Christmas themes to making ornaments and surprises for our families, the classroom has been buzzing. They have also learned that giving is just as important as receiving. The students collected can goods for the Dixie Electric Food Drive and donated toys for the Heart to Heart Foster Care Ministry. They took their first off-campus field trip to Choctafaula Farms where they participated in Christmas games, took a trail ride to see camels, goats, horses, cows, wildebeests, ostriches, and zebras, and topped off the day with a visit from Santa.

Fourth Grade History Field Trip

As an enrichment for Fourth Grade Alabama History, Mrs. Johnson’s class took a field trip to learn all about cotton. As a special bonus, the students also enjoyed a presentation about the native Americans who inhabited the very land that we walked on during the field trip. The trip began at the Milstead Gin Company in Shorter, AL. Mr. Joey Scarborough and Ms. Donna Dicks arranged for the students to tour the gin. Mr. Scarborough conducted the tour that started in the upstairs classroom where students “ginned cotton” by hand and learned about the gin and how it worked. Students then toured the seed house, looked at cotton modules, and saw what a finished bale of cotton looked like.

Students then visited Segrest Farms in Shorter, a seventh-generation cotton farm. Students were amazed at the snowy white fields and the equipment that was used to harvest the cotton. The highlight of the trip was getting to walk through the fields and pick a bag of cotton to take home as a souvenir. Mr. Clay Segrest and Mrs. Kellie Sirmon were our presenters at the cotton field.

After picking cotton, students enjoyed a picnic at the Sirmon’s home. They enjoyed lunch and playing outdoors on a beautiful fall day! Lunch was followed with a special presentation on native American artifacts and lifestyles. Each student received a projectile point to keep and made a dream catcher to take home.

A huge thank you goes to our presenters and hosts who have graciously welcomed us for more than 30 years!

K5 Enjoys Camping Activities

The K5 class at Macon East Academy has been enjoying many exciting activities with their beginning of the year camping theme. They constructed camping scenes incorporating their names, read camping themed literature and created characters from the stories, made  smores using a solar oven, made campfire snacks using grapes, pretzels, and cheese curls, and learned camping themed songs and fingerplays. It was a great start to a fun-filled school year of learning at Macon East Academy.

BACK TO SCHOOL BASH!

Macon East Academy held its fourth annual Back to School Bash and Silent Auction on August 21, 2022. Hosted by the PTO, this event brings families from the school and community together for an afternoon of fun and fellowship for all ages. Kids enjoyed carnival games and prizes, inflatables, face painting, and more. This year the Pike Road Fire Department set up their truck and allowed kids to work the water hose (with help). A new addition this year was Laurel Hill Farms that brought various farm animals for the kids to pet, hold, and learn about. Our high school kids were a great help in running the games and we appreciate all our great volunteers. The day was topped off with a silent auction, featuring a wide variety of items up for the bidding. The Bash was a wonderful success thanks to a great turnout, generous local sponsors, and many hardworking volunteers. The PTO is already planning for even more fun for next year!
