Science Fair

Each year students in grades 4 through 6 participate in the Science Fair.  With projects in either the biological or physical categories, each student must complete an essay paper, project display board, and accompanying experiment and results.  Outside judges evaluate each project based on purpose, hypothesis, procedure, and results.  Awards for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and honorable mention are awarded to students in each grade and category. Six students (Lalah Culpepper, Colton Lunn, Marissa Robledo, Shamiah Thomas, Peyton Underwood, and Madison Vocino) participated in the AISA District Science Fair.  Macon East students proudly took 3 of the 6 awards presented at District and advanced to the State Science Fair on February 1.  Madison Vocino received a 1st place ribbon at district for her biological project “Static Electricity and Humidity.”  Colton Lunn’s “Toungue-Tastic” entry took 2nd place at district, while Marissa Robledo’s physical science project “Which Type of Antenna Will Allow Someone to Call for Help” earned a 3rd place ribbon.  We congratulate these outstanding winners and all of our science fair participants on the hard work that was put into each project and essay.

DARE Participants Complete Program

Macon East 5th grade students recently completed the DARE – Drug Abuse Resistance Education program led by Kofee Anderson and Jordan Ivey with the Montgomery Sheriff’s department.  Each year Mrs. Melissa Gilmore’s 5th grade class looks forward to participating in the semester long educational program that equips them to take a stand against involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence.  Founded in 1983, the officer-led program teaches students how to resist peer pressure.  At the end of the program, each student writes an essay and award winners are selected by the officers acknowledging their accomplishments.  This year’s essay winners were Elise Logan and Peyton Baggett, and Mollie Ross was awarded for best exemplifying the DARE philosophy.  Mason Humphries was also honored as most improved in participation throughout the program.  We appreciate the Montgomery Sheriff’s Department and their involvement in bringing this program to Macon East.

Seniors Sign to Play College Sports

Three Macon East senior athletes signed their letters of intent to play collegiate sports on November 14.  Madisyn Kennedy is the first  MEA student to sign with an SEC school.  She committed several years ago to Mississippi State and is looking forward to her future as part of the Bulldogs softball program.  A three-sport athlete at Macon East, Madisyn has racked up state championship rings in both softball and volleyball.  Playing varsity in both sports since 7th grade, Madisyn’s work ethic on the field and court is the same as in the classroom.  She currently serves as the President of the National Honor Society.  Named AISA All-Metro player of the year in all three sports, Madisyn remains humble in all of her accomplishments and is a positive leader in the Lady Knights sports program.

TJ James, who joined the Lady Knights program just last season, also signed to play softball at Coastal Alabama Community College in Monroeville.  Following a streak of 7 home runs in one tournament last season, TJ was recruited by Coastal Alabama and said it was a good fit for her.  TJ was a part of the 2018 team that reclaimed the state title for Macon East.

Tucker Neven, who returned to Macon East last year after several years away, signed to play baseball at Lawson State Community College.  Having just led the Knights football team to the semifinals as quarterback, Tucker is ready to hit the diamond and begin preparing for the 2019 season.  The Knights have won back-to-back AISA state titles in baseball and will be seeking a third this year.  Tucker was 10-1 on the mound for the Knights last year and plays outfield when he isn’t throwing.  Tucker also led the team at the plate.  All of these student athletes are representative of the strong work ethic and leadership that is fundamental in Macon East’s athletic and academic programs.
