Each year students in grades 4 through 6 participate in the Science Fair.  With projects in either the biological or physical categories, each student must complete an essay paper, project display board, and accompanying experiment and results.  Outside judges evaluate each project based on purpose, hypothesis, procedure, and results.  Awards for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and honorable mention are awarded to students in each grade and category. Six students (Lalah Culpepper, Colton Lunn, Marissa Robledo, Shamiah Thomas, Peyton Underwood, and Madison Vocino) participated in the AISA District Science Fair.  Macon East students proudly took 3 of the 6 awards presented at District and advanced to the State Science Fair on February 1.  Madison Vocino received a 1st place ribbon at district for her biological project “Static Electricity and Humidity.”  Colton Lunn’s “Toungue-Tastic” entry took 2nd place at district, while Marissa Robledo’s physical science project “Which Type of Antenna Will Allow Someone to Call for Help” earned a 3rd place ribbon.  We congratulate these outstanding winners and all of our science fair participants on the hard work that was put into each project and essay.

Jonathan Mathis and Lane Johnson were selected to the All-State Drama Cast at the AISA State Drama competition.  Rachel Sargent, Lane Johnson, Emily Brooks, Caroline Capps, Johnny Mathis, Anna Claire Berrey, Jaden Rossell and Ethan Jones participated in an ensemble performance from “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller. The cast won 3rd at the AISA District Drama Competition to advance to the AISA State Drama Competition in January.  The Macon East Drama Club is led by Rayleen Luis.

Macon East 5th grade students recently completed the DARE – Drug Abuse Resistance Education program led by Kofee Anderson and Jordan Ivey with the Montgomery Sheriff’s department.  Each year Mrs. Melissa Gilmore’s 5th grade class looks forward to participating in the semester long educational program that equips them to take a stand against involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence.  Founded in 1983, the officer-led program teaches students how to resist peer pressure.  At the end of the program, each student writes an essay and award winners are selected by the officers acknowledging their accomplishments.  This year’s essay winners were Elise Logan and Peyton Baggett, and Mollie Ross was awarded for best exemplifying the DARE philosophy.  Mason Humphries was also honored as most improved in participation throughout the program.  We appreciate the Montgomery Sheriff’s Department and their involvement in bringing this program to Macon East.

The Macon East Academy varsity volleyball team recently received their rings for their state championship win in the AISA AA tournament. The Knights finished this season with an overall record of 37-7 and brought the State Title back to Macon East for 7th time in 8 years. Along the way, the Knights racked up a pile of accomplishments this season setting the tone for their back to back state title. The Knights fell short this season in the Region tournament to Edgewood Academy but fought back in the State Championship game sweeping Edgewood in just 3 sets. This years team has totaled over 450 aces , 1,500 kills , 60 blocks, 1,200 assist , and 400 digs.

Junior, Emily Brooks reached over 500 career kills and 1,500 career assist. She was selected as State All-Tournament Team and is a NAAPS All-American.

Seniors:
Anne Turner Cobb reached over 900 career kills in her 2 years as a Knight. Ariel Brown reached over 500 career kills in her 2 years at Macon East. She was selected to the State Tournament All Tournament team and named a NAAPS All-American. Madisyn Kennedy has reached over 1,000 career kills. Madisyn was selected as the State Tournament MVP and named a NAAPS All-American. She is a two time
AISA Player of the Year.

Under the leadership of Coach Codi Moon, the team fought to defeat Edgewood in the title game after falling to the Wildcats 3 times in the regular season.  The Knights lose 7 seniors off this year’s squad, but look forward to the 2019 season with another state title up for grabs.

Macon East 7th grade students, (l-r) Jacob Simpson, Anna Watson, and Tanner Surles, were recognized as outstanding scholars as part of the annual Duke University Talent Identification Program.  Selection as a Duke TIP honoree is based on scores in the 95% or above on national standardized achievement testing.  Students selected by Duke TIP are eligible to take the ACT or SAT college entrance exam as a measure of their academic achievement and potential.

The Macon East middle school math team placed 2nd in the AISA District Math Competition at Lee-Scott Academy on January 15.  Team members from the 7th and 8th grades are: Front Row: Ryan Russell, Anna Glynn Lott, Kaiden Byrom, and Alison Magda, Back Row: Ethan Jones, Jameson Byrom, Jack Jones, Barrett Spaeth, and Matthew Kitchens.  The middle school math team is lead by Mrs. Karen Harris.

Macon East Academy softball player, Dawn Johnson signed to join the Huntingdon Hawks for the 2020 season.  Dawn  has attended Macon East since Pre-K3 (14 years) and has played varsity softball since 8th grade.  As a catcher for the Lady Knights, she has been part of 3 State Championship teams and has a .973 catching percentage behind the plate.  In 2018, as a junior, Dawn was named to the AISA State all-tournament team, the all-metro team, and received the Knights Award for leadership in athletics.  Dawn was also named to the AISA State all-tournament team as a sophomore in 2017.  Dawn in the daughter of Johnny and Regina Johnson and granddaughter of Macon East 4th grade teacher, Marjory Johnson.

Macon East students in 4th through 8th grade compete annually in a grade level spelling bee.  Class winners and alternates attended the AISA District Spelling Bee on November 14.  At the district competition, Kaiden Byrom (7th grade) won first place, Lalah Culpepper (4th grade) and Sophia Merz (6th grade) placed 2nd, and Ryan Russell (8th grade) finished in 3rd.  Kaiden Byrom represented Macon East on December 6 at the AISA State Spelling Bee at Huntingdon College and placed 3rd.  Kadien has represented Macon East at the AISA Spelling Bee every year since 4th grade.
