Honors Day 2017

Macon East held its annual upper school Honors Day assembly Friday, May 12 in the school gymnasium. The Class of 2017 began the event with their graduate processional. Numerous college and university representatives and community organizations were in attendance to present the senior class with over $1.95 million dollars in scholarships. Following the recognition of all scholarship offerings, school faculty and administration presented the following Subject Awards and Special Awards. The Class of 2017 also received their honor cords to be worn at the commencement ceremony. We congratulate all of these 7th-12th grade students on their outstanding accomplishments.

Macon East Baseball Takes State

The Macon East varsity baseball team swept Clarke Prep at the AISA AA state tournament at Patterson Field to bring home the championship trophy. The Knights went 33-13 for the season and won their Area with a record of 6-0. With a bye through the first round of playoffs the Knights hosted Escambia in round two and Autauga in round 3. Losing one game in each series, Macon East picked up the tie breaker win to advance to the championship series with Clarke Prep. With a crowd of Macon East fans cheering them on, Coach Pickett and his team took game one 8-4 and shut out the Gators 6-0 in game two with Kohner Massey on the mound. This was the first state championship win for the Macon East baseball program since 2004, and a sweet victory following a loss in 2015 to Edgewood at the state tournament. Seniors Connor Davis and Will Dowe combined for nine RBIs to lead Macon East at the plate. As relief pitcher, Mason Wray came in to game one earning him the win. A group of seniors made up the Knights all-tournament team: Will Dowe, Kohner Massey, Mason Wray and tournament MVP Connor Davis. Davis was 4-for-6 with four RBIs, three runs, and two doubles in the sweep. Coach Bob Pickett knew that this could be the Knights’ season to take it all, and they never let up on the goal of getting to State one game at a time. Pickett credits Coach Jim Brantley rejoining the program at pitching coach as a major part of the team’s successful season.

Lewis Signs with Emmanuel College

Macon East basketball player Christian Lewis signed to play next year at Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Georgia. Lewis transferred to Macon East from Chelsea High School his junior year to play under Knights head coach and Lewis’s grandfather, Larry Chapman. In his two years at Macon East Christian was a starter on the 2016 AISA AA State Runner-up team and the 2017 AISA AA State Championship team. Christian also represented Macon East on the AISA All-Star team. Christian received both academic and athletic scholarships at Emmanuel.

Jimmy Hitchcock Award Nominees

Seth Meadows and Alex Wyrosdick were honored to represent Macon East Academy this year as nominees for the prestigious Jimmy Hitchcock Award. Since 1959, the YMCA of Greater Montgomery has recognized Christian leadership in athletics through the Jimmy Hitchcock Memorial Award. The banquet, held each year at Frazer United Methodist Church, honors area seniors nominated by their school who possess the qualities of strong personal character, dependability, effort, team and church leadership, school leadership, and academic excellence. Alex and Seth both stand out among their peers at Macon East as outstanding students in the classroom as well as leaders in their sport, church, and community. The YMCA also acknowledges high school freshman who possess these same qualities and aspire to one day be Hitchcock nominees. This year’s freshman certificate recipients from Macon East were Emily Claire Lott and Jake Wyrosdick.

AISA State Art Show

Macon East Academy art students recently competed at the AISA State Art Show at Faulkner University. In the Kindergarten – 1st grade division Campbell Loughridge received a 3rd place ribbon for her waterbase entry, while 5th grader Kacy Rutland also received 3rd place honors in the printmaking category. Freshmen Valorie Roberts and Haley Wren were awarded 2nd and 3rd place ribbons respectively in printmaking and collage/mixed media. Taking 1st place at the State competition was Macon East junior, Seon Young Jang for her collage/mixed media entry. Tiffany Ala, MEA art instructor, was proud of her students recognition received at the school, AISA district and AISA state art shows.

Garmany Signs to Play College Hoops

Macon East Academy basketball player Slate Garmany signed to play next season with Mississippi College in Clinton, MS. Slate transferred to Macon East from Oak Mountain High School in 2015 to play under Coach Larry Chapman. At point guard, Slate became the key to the Knights offense. In his two years at Macon East, Slate has been part of last year’s AISA 2A State Runner-up team and this year’s State Championship team. The Knights had a 33-0 perfect season ending with the state title they set out to win. Garmany was named to the AISA State All-Tournament team, AISA All-Star team, the All-Metro 1st team, and AISA State 2nd team. We congratulate Slate on signing with the Choctaws and receiving both academic and athletic scholarships.

Macon East Golf

The Macon East Golf team competed this week in the AISA State Tournament at Saugahatchee Country Club in Opelika. Bryson O’Malley finished the two day tournament in 6th place shooting 5 over par. Bryson was named to the All-State Tournament team after an outstanding 1 over par round on day two. He will also participate on a 5 man AISA team in a state-to-state tournament later this spring. Bishop Stringer also had a great showing at state coming in 10th place overall and shooting 11 over par for the tournament. The Knights golf team is coached by Mike O’Malley.

Billups Named AISA Player of the Year

Artavious Billups was honored to be selected as the AISA Boys Basketball Player of the Year at a recent banquet. He became the first Macon East player to win a major state basketball award, but he hopes he’s just started a trend. Although Artavious was new to Macon East this year, the senior guard had a huge impact on the basketball program under the leadership of Coaches Larry Chapman and Lincoln Glass. Receiving all tournament nods and MVP honors at every tournament this season, including the state finals, Artavious led the Knights in scoring and represented Macon East in the AISA All-Star game and was named AISA All-Metro player of the year. The addition of Billups to the squad and his 18.5 points per game average definitely contributed to the Knights 33-0 perfect season. Artavious plans to continue his basketball career at the collegiate level but has not yet announced his plans. We congratulate Artavious on his selection as the AISA State Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

Art Show

This year’s Macon East Art Show featured artwork from students in kindergarten through the 12th grade. Macon East’s Best of Show winner was 9th grader Haley Wren’s mixed media/collage entry. Sixty-three entries that received 1st or 2nd place ribbons at the school show advanced to the AISA District Art Show at Edgewood Academy on April 19. Macon East had 15 winners at the district show in the categories of water base, printmaking, color drawing, painting, collage, and 3D art. District art show winners were (K5-1st) Campbell Loughridge, William Cunningham, (2nd-3rd) Aiden Crow, (4th-6th) Brennan Mauney, Kacy Rutland, Lucy Taylor, (7th-9th) Valerie Roberts, Haley Wren, Zach Kitchens, (10th-12th) Madison Folkes, Jennifer Campbell, and Seon Young Jang. Six of these talented artists will display their artwork at the AISA State Show on Friday, April 28 at Faulkner University.

Prom 2017

This year’s Jr./Sr. Prom took place Friday, April 14 at the RSA Plaza Terrace in downtown Montgomery. The theme was “Hearts are Wild,” and the junior class did an outstanding job transforming the venue into a Casino Royale theme. Mrs. Karen Harris, prom sponsor, along with Katie Jo Dickey, Alexa McGough, and the junior class officers planned a fun night for all the juniors, seniors , and their guests with entertainment from DJ Gil Roberson. As the evening drew to an end, Sommer Sears and Will Dowe were crowned Prom Queen and King.
