Representing Macon East on the East girls team were Lexi Brantley, Jesi Garrett, and Paxton Searle, and Mason Blackwell was selected to the East boys team. Each of these outstanding athletes enjoyed a few days of practice with their opponents from other AISA schools and the opportunity to get to know the other athletes as members of the same team. Science Fair Winners

Macon East held its annual Science Fair in early February. Each student in grades 4-6 submitted a research paper, project board, and experiment in either the biological or physical science categories. First place winners, Jameson Byrom, Gavin Justice, Trey Matthews, Kacy Rutland, Parker Strickland, and Lucy Taylor advanced to the AISA District fair at Chattahoochee Valley Community College. Four Macon East students received medals at district and advanced to the state competition. The AISA State Science Fair took place February 25 at Huntingdon College. Each participant stood nervously with their project and gave an oral presentation to the judges. Macon East was proud to receive the first place award in both the biological and physical science categories. Jameson Byrom’s entry “The Eyes Taste It,” proved how the color of food affects a person’s perception of taste and was the overall 1st place winner in the biological category. Taking 1st place in physical science, sixth grader Trey Matthews’ project “Non-Newtonian Fluids” proved how non-Newtonian fluids change viscosity when a force is applied. We are extremely proud of all the students who participated in this year’s science fair, and honored to have both 1st place state winners at MEA.

These included three of our students from Macon East Academy. Madison Folkes’ photo, Chemical Leak, shows a pineapple covered and dripping with white paint. Chloe Patterson’s (not pictured) photograph, Natural, gives us a glimpse of several broken chicken eggs in their various, yet unique, colors. Hannah Johnsons’ mixed media, Melting Point, displays three, painted, papier Mache fruits on top of a marbled paper and Plexiglas background. These Macon East artists’ work will be on exhibition from January 16 until March 6.

The PTO sponsored another successful Fun Run event his year in partnership with Boosterthon. The Boosterthon team spent a full week on campus encouraging the students with character and fitness lessons as they worked to get pledges for the big event on February 11. Pre-K through 6 grade classes participated in the morning run each trying to reach 35 laps, and the 7th through 9th graders enjoyed a color run in the afternoon to benefit the PTO. Reading Buddies

During the first semester of the school year sixth grade students partnered with the kindergarten for the Reading Buddies program. The younger students met with their buddy each week to practice their reading skills and prepare them to participate in the accelerated reader program during second semester. Using the Mo Willems series of Elephant and Piggie books, the mentoring program was a huge success as the kindergarteners grew their reading skills and their self-confidence.

Knights Basketball

The Knights have had a fun and exciting season on the court this year. The JV Girls coached by Glynn Lott and Codi Moon finished the season with a record of 14-3 and were runners-up at the JV State Invitational Tournament. This year the JV Boys welcomed Coach Lincoln Glass to the program and ended a tough season at 3-11. The Varsity Girls finished the regular season first place in their Area. Also coached by Lott and Moon, the girls overall season record is 15-4 including a tournament win at the Pepsi Classic. Seniors Grace Allen, Lexi Brantley, Jesi Garrett, and Paxton Searle have led the team on and off the court. Former AUM Coach, Larry Chapman also joined the Knights basketball staff this year, and has had quite an impact on the program. The Varsity Boys also finished first place in the Area with a record of 14-5 and a tournament win at Autauga Academy’s Christmas Tournament. Although many members of this year’s team are new to Macon, they have truly embraced the Knight spirit and led the program with great enthusiasm. Seniors Mason Blackwell and Austin Reese are both first year athletes at Macon and have easily stepped into the leadership role with great sportsmanship.

The Knights headed to the AISA Region tournament January 29th at Edgewood Academy with a bye through the first round of play. Both teams advanced to the championship game following a 62-43 win over East Memorial Christian by the boys and a 58-21 victory for the girls over host team Edgewood. In Saturday’s games the Knights came up short with both teams taking 2nd place for the AA Region 1. Seniors Lexi Brantley and Jesi Garrett were named to the girls all-tournament team, and juniors Channy Blackwell and Slate Garmany received all-tournament acknowledgement for the boys. The Knights advance to the Elite Eight tournament Wednesday, February 3 at the Montgomery Multiplex. Games times are 6:00 and 7:30.
