SENIOR BUDDIES

The Senior Buddy program unites the Senior class with smallest Knights in preschool.  Caitlin Bruce, Senior Buddy Coordinator says, “the Senior Buddy tradition is one of my favorite things to organize every year! Our Pre-school students look up to the “big kids”. We meet throughout the year and do crafts, exchange goodies, and even play together! Believe it or not, the Seniors enjoy it just as much as the little buddies!”  The senior buddy program personifies the family atmosphere found at Macon East Academy.   The preschool buddies enjoy cheering for their senior buddies at Macon East sporting events, high fiving them on the sidewalks, and bonding with the older students.

The seniors look forward to participating and mentoring to the younger students.  We asked a few seniors what they looked forward to when meeting their buddy:

“I love meeting new friends, especially kids younger than me, I can be a role model/inspiration to them.” Tyler  Daniels

“I will love hanging out with my buddy because I can be a mentor to Easton.” Khamani Driver

“I really enjoy meeting new friends! Juneau seems like a cool person. This opportunity is a fantastic way to strengthen the alliance between the class of 2022 and the class of 2035.” Bryant Rascoll

Luke Noffsinger Attends Alabama Boys State!

Luke Noffsinger attended the 84th Annual Alabama Boys State program at The University of Alabama recently.  Sponsored by the American Legion Department of Alabama, more than 600 students from across the state met for this unique summit to receive hands-on leadership training in government and community service under the motto, “We Build Citizenship”.  Boys state was founded to supplement the curriculum taught in high school civics classes.  The program teaches that the preservation of our democracy depends on informed citizens electing responsible officials to administer our government. Luke was elected county commissioner for Jefferson County representing City 12 – Frazier, which was awarded the Best City for the entire Boys State.  He was also a part of the Frazier ultimate frisbee team that went undefeated for the week.  Luke really enjoyed participating in the week of learning, leading and making lifelong friends.  Luke is the President of the Student Government Association at Macon East Academy, and we look forward to Luke implementing the skills he learned and continuing to grow as a leader and role model at Macon East Academy.

Rachel Major Attends Girls State

Rachel Major represented Macon East Academy at this year’s Alabama Girls State held on the campus of The University of Alabama. Alabama Girls State continues to be the primary youth leadership program for young women in Alabama. The goal is to learn the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of American citizenship in order that they may understand and participate in the functioning of their government and to help them grasp the meaning of some of the responsibilities they must assume as they become adults. The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program operates through a nonpartisan curriculum where students assume the roles of government leaders to become mayors and county and state officials of their Alabama Girls State. Rachel was elected Mayor of her city and thoroughly enjoyed meeting new friends and had an incredible experience.  We are so proud of you, Rachel, we look forward to your future leadership at Macon East Academy!

ALFA Youth Leadership Conference

An elite group of ninth and tenth graders from throughout Alabama attended the Alfa Youth Leadership Conference at the 4-H Center in Columbiana on April 29-30.  Macon East Academy representatives included:  Anna Watson, Wade Desmarais, Ryan Russell, Matthew Kitchens, Anna Glynn Lott, and Jack Jones.

Students applied for the conference which focused on training future leaders. It is sponsored by the Alabama Farmers Federation, Alabama Farmers Agriculture Foundation, county Farmers Federations and Alabama Farm Credit (AFC).  Attendees came from 30 counties and worked to identify personal strengths, develop negotiation skills and discover a passion for service.  The agenda included team-building activities at the 4-H Center’s challenge course and teen safety workshops.  AFC was a new supporter of the program this year and sponsored motivational speaker and leadership trainer Rhett Laubach who challenged students to be a positive influence on their peers.
