Macon East Academy Features 6th Grade and Kindergarten Reading Buddies!

Mrs. Keebleโ€™s 6th grade class enjoys participating in a reading program with the Kindergarten class. The reading buddies program helps model good reading and students improve their skills. The older students gain the opportunity to develop fluency as well as a sense of pride in their accomplishments. In addition, they often come to see the value and love of reading as well as gaining self-esteem. Kindergarteners build a relationship with the older students and improve their reading skills as well.

Pre-K and K5 students celebrated the 100th day of school recently. K5 enjoyed making 100โ€™s Day necklaces, having a candy hunt for 100 pieces of candy in the library, playing โ€œRace to 100โ€ partner games in the classroom, and having a special 100โ€™s Day snack. All students had a great time celebrating being 100 days smarter!ย  We love our little Knights, they are so precious! We love our teachers too – way to go Ms. Lawrence, Ms. Taylor, Ms. Jordan, Ms. Bruce and Ms. Mills!

Together they have been teaching the students about pet responsibilities, dog safety, and are practicing their reading skills as well. Students get to meet and read each week with Larry one-on-one. As they are reading their library books to Larry, he helps calm any anxiety that they may be feeling with reading because he is such a good listener. Mrs. Smith says โ€œThis is a great opportunity that helps our first graders become stronger readers as they build up their confidence! We look forward to our time with Mrs. Mary and Larry every week!โ€

Scholastic Pajama Program

For the past several years, Macon East students in K-3, K-4, 2nd and 4th grade classes have participated in Scholasticโ€™s Pajama Program. Students are encouraged to donate brand-new pajamas for this annual great bedtime story pajama drive. For every pair of pajamas donated, Scholastic Book Clubs donates a brand-new book to Pajama Program. The purpose of this program is to give kids affected by instability a good night – for a good day! This year these Macon East classes donated over 50 pairs of new pajamas!

Spelling Bee Time!

Macon East students recently participated in one of the oldest educational competitions in the United States of America, dating back to as far as the 1700s โ€“ the Spelling Bee! The spelling bee is an educational competition of spelling and vocabulary and can be an exciting and enriching experience.

Elise Logan, Madison Vocino, Eli Churchwell, Ava Noffsinger and Halyn Wren recently represented their grades in the AISA District competition at Chambers Academy. Alternates who attended in support of their classmates were:ย  Bella Chambers, Hagen Owens, Bentley Graham, Sophie Clark and Bentley Faulk.

Ava Noffsinger won the District spelling bee by spelling the word solve correctly and then tongs for the win! Halyn Wren was the alternate for 4th grade.

The AISA State Spelling Bee was held at Troy University of Montgomery Rosa Parks Auditorium on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 and Ava Noffsinger won 1st runner up for the 5th grade level!ย  Way to go Ava!

The importance to support our young generation in building a solid foundation in spelling and vocabulary is very important to us at Macon East and we believe it leads to better literacy. We are so proud of all our students, Mrs. Johnson (Spelling Bee Sponsor) and all the teachers who teach and support these kiddos!
