Fun Run

This year’s Boosterthon Fun Run event raised $10,500 for the Macon East PTO. Boosterthon’s Wild West S.T.E.A.M. theme for 2020 was fun and educational teaching honesty, gratitude, generosity, kindness, and humility. The PTO plans to use the funds raised to add playground sun shades to the existing lower school play area. We thank everyone who made a pledge supporting our students, our corporate sponsors, and the PTO for all they do for the school. The PTO is proud to continue to partner with Boosterthon each year in this unique fundraising event that allows the students to take ownership of making positive improvements to their school while learning great character lessons in the week-long program.

Rachel Sargent Honored as DAR Good Citizen

Rachel Sargent was honored as one of this year’s recipients of the Good Citizen Award presented by a local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Rachel and the other award recipients attended a luncheon held in their honor at the Montgomery Country Club. For over 125 years, the Daughters of the American Revolution members have honored their heritage by making a difference in their communities and country in an organization with a deeply rich history. The DAR Good Citizen Award and Scholarship Contest, created in 1934, is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. This award recognizes individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. These students are selected by their teachers because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree. We congratulate Rachel on her selection as the Macon East Academy representative for the 2020 DAR Good Citizen Award.

Jordan and Stringer Sign with Local Universities

Two Macon East star athletes have committed to continue their athletic careers at Montgomery universities. Coleby Jordan signed to play football at Faulkner University. Coleby is a three time all-state defensive end, and in his senior season, rushed for 1,146 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also had 33 career sacks in 33 games. Coleby was an integral part of the Knights 2019 winning season (7-3), and was named to the AISA All-Star team. Coleby never quits on the football field and will be an asset to the Eagles program.

The Macon East golf team may have only one member, but he continues to make an impact on the AISA, the Amateur Golf Association, and the Junior PGA golf circuit around the state. Bishop Stringer has won over 10 AISA golf tournaments since 2017, and finished the 2019 season as the AISA State Runner-Up. Bishop earned AISA All-State Team honors in 2018 and 2019 and earned the 2019 All-Metro Golf Award. After being heavily recruited by golf coaches around the southeast, Bishop chose to stay close to home and commit to Alabama State University. A student at Macon East since kindergarten, Bishop also excels academically and on the football field.

National Junior Honor Society Inducts New Members

The Macon East chapter of the National Junior Honor Society welcomed fourteen new members at an induction ceremony held February 24. After the NJHS officers presented the honor society ideals of scholarship, service, leadership and character to the inductees, Erica Hammonds, NJHS advisor, awarded the certificates of membership. Serving as officers this year are: Jack Jones (President), Ryan Russell (Vice President), Ryann Moseley (Secretary/Treasurer), and Wade Desmarais (Chaplain).

Basketball Final Four and All-Stars

The Knights varsity boys’ basketball team returned to the Montgomery Multiplex for the Final Four game this year as the 3A Area champions. With point guard Jayman Pettway leading the way, the team finished the season just short of the championship game with a 20-13 record. The Knights came up short in the Final Four matchup with Tuscaloosa Academy (52-39). Pettway averaged 8.5 points per game, 4.7 assists, and 25 steals. He had a game high of 18 points and 6 assists against Evangel. Pettway was named to the All-State Tournament team, the AISA All-Star team, and was named the Knights’ offensive player of the year. Jeremiah Carnegie received the Knights award and hustle award, while Wendarius McQueen was selected as best defensive player. Stone Yarnell was named by the coaches as most improved player of the year. Coach Lincoln Glass said, “I am proud of the way this team fought through adversity and came together to do remarkable things. The future continues to be bright for Macon East Academy basketball.”

Emi Lott and Jayman Pettway were selected to represent Macon East at the annual AISA All-Star game at Garrett Coliseum on February 21. Emi scored 5 points for the East squad who defeated the West team 58-53. In the boys 116-103 victory over the West, Jayman finished with 14 points, 7 assists, and 4 steals earning himself the honor of AISA East All-Star MVP.

The varsity Lady Knights ended the season 12-15 with Emi Lott named as team MVP. Lott had 240 points for the season, averaging 9.5 points, 1 assist, and 4 rebounds per game. She was selected as the Knight award winner at the basketball awards banquet. Coach Wendell Barr said, “Everything offensively went through Emi, and there was a definite correlation between how the team performed and how she performed.” Coach Barr also presented awards to Mattie Ross (best offensive player), Georgia Blaze (best defensive player), Emily Nickles (leader in rebounds), and Kerry Straw (most improved).

Grandparents Day

On February 13, the lower school students and faculty welcomed Macon East grandparents to their annual Grandparents Day program. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a proclamation declaring Grandparents Day as a national holiday to honor grandparents and help children become more appreciative of the guidance and love they offer. This year’s program, which the students also performed for the residents at Wesley Gardens earlier in the week, was called “Acts of Kindness.” Through songs and recited word, the preschool through sixth grade students shared how random acts of kindness and giving to others while expecting nothing in return brings the greatest joy.

Avery Kyser Takes 2nd Place at State Science Fair

Macon East fourth grader, Avery Kyser took home 2nd place honors at the AISA State and District Science Fairs. Earning a 1st place ribbon at MEA’s annual fourth to sixth grade science fair, Avery and five other students presented their projects at the district event. Avery’s project “Whatcha Drinking” was a study of the effects of different drinks on our teeth. She used real baby teeth and displayed photos of the teeth before and after exposure to a variety of sugary and sugar free drinks. Also representing Macon East at the AISA district event were Addison Longcrier, Payton Baggot, Payton Underwood (physical science category), Parker Ruskin, and Elliot Fitch (biological science category). Peyton Baggot also placed second at the district fair and advanced to the AISA State Science Fair held January 31 at Huntingdon College.

Academics, Achievement and Athletics: The 3 Pillars of Macon East Academy

As a parent or guardian, you want nothing more than for your student to succeed. At Macon East Academy, we strive to provide the best possible learning environment for our students. Our success is due to an important foundation: the three pillars of Macon East Academy—also known as academics, achievement and athletics. Now, we’re here to break down what they mean—and how they can help your student.

Academics

Your student’s academic experience will help him or her build the foundation for a successful life. That means that his or her time in the classroom is indispensable. We teach grades kindergarten to 12th grade, which means that your student can expect a consistent learning style and community.

Macon East Academy follows developmental milestones. That means that as our students get older, we introduce new learning styles and courses that are best suited to their growing minds. To make it simpler, our school is split into upper and lower schools, which are tailored to the learning abilities of the students at their current ages. The lower school focuses on pupils from kindergarten to sixth grade, while the upper school focuses on pupils from seventh to 12th grades. Starting in ninth grade, students can also take honors, college preparatory, and AP classes.

In other words, as your student grows, their academic experience will grow with them. All the while, he or she will also learn more about the Christian faith.

Achievement

We offer a safe, nurturing environment at Macon East Academy—one that encourages students every day. Because we encourage our students—and foster a responsible, caring community—they can grow their personal, athletic, and academic achievements.

We also make sure that our students will continue to achieve their goals long after they graduate! How? Well, first of all, we strive to help students become kind, hard-working members of the community. We also make sure that they have the right academic foundation to achieve their goals, attending their colleges of choice. Finally, with our focus on preparation, dedication, and good citizenship, we can help our students prepare to succeed at their future jobs and in the outside world.

Athletics

Learning in the classroom is important! However, it’s just one of the three pillars of Macon East Academy. We have strong athletics programs, which can do wonders for a student’s social, emotional, and even educational health. Not only do they build confidence and good sportsmanship throughout everyday life, but they will allow your student to improve their physical strength alongside his or her academic strength. We offer athletics programs in sports like:

Math Team Competes at AISA Event

The middle school math team participated in the AISA district math competition on January 14. Ethan Jones won the highest score award and went on to represent Macon East at the state competition on February 7. Middle school math team members are Hunter Wren, Chase Lashlee, Barrett Spaeth, Anna Watson, Julia Mathis, Addison Little, Mary Taylor May, Ethan Jones, Jameson Byrom, and Kaiden Byrom.
