Rachel Sargent Competes in State DYW

Macon East Academy senior, Rachel Sargent participated in the Distinguished Young Woman of Alabama program the week of January 11-18. Representing Macon County at the state program, Rachel was awarded a certificate for her “Be Your Best Self”essay and received one of three Bruce Triftshauser Community Service Awards. Rachel enjoyed the week full of activities, interviews, and meeting all of the other outstanding DYW participants from across the state. In the talent portion of the competition, Rachel played the piano and sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” She will be attending Auburn University in the fall on an academic scholarship.

Cleveland Named AISA Back of the Year

Macon East quarterback, Cephus Cleveland was honored as the AISA All-State Back of the Year at the Alabama Mr. Football awards banquet, held January 15 at the Renaissance Hotel and Conference Center. In the 2019 season, Cleveland was responsible for 35 of Macon East’s 55 touchdowns. He had 18 rushing and 17 passing touchdowns. On the year, Cleveland ran for 907 yards, threw for 1,107 yards, and had 44 tackles on defense. Overall the Knights went 7-3 for the season with an appearance in the AISA 3A playoffs. Cephus represented Macon East in the AISA All-Star football game, where he was selected as team captain and outstanding offensive back for the West team. Cleveland plans to continue his football career at the collegiate level, but has not made his final decision where he will play in 2020.

Emi Lott Signs with MUW

Macon East senior, Emi Lott signed to play volleyball next year at Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, MS. Emi is a 2-year starter for the Macon East Knights with career stats of 38 aces, 119 kills, 32 blocks, and 121 digs. She is the daughter of MEA headmaster, Glynn Lott and wife Michelle. Emi helped lead the Lady Knights to the 2018 AISA State Championship and a 2019 Final Four appearance. Emi, along with teammate Emily Brooks, represented Macon East in the AISA All-Star volleyball game. As a leader in the classroom and on the court, Emi is excited to continue her young volleyball career and received an academic honors scholarship from MUW.

AISA Spelling Bee

Macon East spelling bee winners in fourth through eighth grades represented their school as the Alabama Independent School Association district and state competitions. Fifth grader, Madison Vocino and eighth grader, Kaiden Byrom won 1st place at the district event. For Kaiden this was her fifth time winning the district spelling bee at each grade level and advancing to the state competition. Chase Lashlee was also honored for his 3rd place finish in the district 7th grade bee. Other students representing Macon East at district event were, Adam Fitch (4th grade) and Jackson Todd (6th grade). At the state spelling bee, Kaiden Byrom was the eigth grade state runner-up, and Madison Vocino finished 4th in the state for the fifth grade. We congratulate all of these students on their outstanding accomplishments.

Scholars Bowl

The middle school Scholars Bowl team competed at the AISA district event on December 4, finishing in third place after a tie breaker round. Team members were 8th grade students Jameson Byrom, Ethan Jones, Jaden Rossell, and Anna Watson. Ethan led the team as captain and top scorer. The Scholars Bowl teams are sponsored by Ms. Erica Hammonds.

Cabaret

The Drama Club hosted their annual Cabaret on Friday, December 6. The crowd enjoyed a variety of musical and theatrical talent presented on the Macon East stage. The Drama Club is led by Mrs. Rayleen Luis. Each year the group recieves honors at the AISA district and state level dramatic competitions and presents a spring play.

Duke TIP

The following Macon East Academy students were honored to be recognized by the Duke Talent Identification Program based on their performance in the 95th percentile on national standardized achievement testing: Jacob Caddell, Chase Lashlee, Addison Little, Julia Mathis, Marisa Robledo, and Hunter Wren. Seventh grade students selected as Duke TIP scholars are eligible to take the ACT or SAT college entrance exam as a measure of their academic excellence. The Duke University Talent Identification Program is a gifted education program based at Duke University. Founded in 1980 as one of the first pre-collegiate studies programs offered by an American university, the program aims to identify gifted students and provide advanced educational opportunities.

AISA All-Star Football

Senior athletes Cephus Cleveland, Derrick Hooks, Will Heary, Coleby Jordan, Dawon Strickland, and Parker Whittle were selected to represent the Macon East Academy football team in the annual AISA All-Star football game at Cramton Bowl on Friday, December 6. As part of the West team, Cleveland and Hooks were voted among their peers as captains for the game. The East defeated the West 31-13, and Cephus Cleveland received the West’s Most Outstanding Offensive Back award. MEA varsity cheerleaders, Kayla Boroff and Taylor Anne Surles were on the sidelines as part of the AISA West All-Star cheer squad. The girls competed and received this honor during their summer camp at Troy University. The all-star week events included team practices, the all-star participants and parents luncheon, and many memories made with teammates from rival schools. It was an exciting night for these seniors to participate in their final high school football experience among the best athletes in the Alabama Independent School Association.

Brooks & Capps Sign College Commitments

Two Macon East Academy senior athletes signed to continue their athletic careers next year at the collegiate level. Emily Brooks will play volleyball at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth. Brooks’ career prep stats include 2,096 assists, along with 793 kills and 421 aces. She was named to the NAAPS All-American team, the Under Armor All-American team, and the AISA All-Metro team. Emily led her Knights to the AISA AA semi-finals where they fell to Glenwood School and relinquished the AA state title to the Edgewood Wildcats.

Caroline Capps signed her letter of intent to play softball at Wallace Dothan. Caroline transferred to Macon East from ACA, where she has led the Lady Knights as a powerful pitcher for the past three seasons. Putting in extra work in the off season with her travel team, Caroline’s hard work ethic and determination caught the eye of the Wallace coaches. At pitcher for Macon East, Caroline has a 1.22 ERA and a .376 batting average. We congratulate both of these outstanding young women on their accomplishments.

Volleyball All-Stars and Final Four

Macon East Academy seniors, Emily Brooks and Emi Lott represented the Knights in the AISA All-Star Volleyball game at Cramton Bowl on November 2. Their East squad defeated the West at the event honoring senior all-star athletes. Together Brooks and Lott led their Macon East team into the AA Final Four this season, but they relinquished their title as the reigning 2018 state champions. Emily Brooks will continue her volleyball career next year at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, and Emi has recently committed to Mississippi University for Women in Columbus.

For the 8th straight season, the Lady Knights volleyball team soared into the Final Four. But 2019 was not the Knight’s year as the Gators of Glenwood School defeated the team (20-25, 18-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-9) in a hard fought five set battle on the Montgomery Multiplex court. With Brooks, Lott, and young, rising star Sara Cochran leading the team to a 24-10 season, the Knights enjoyed a successful year under the leadership of Coach Codi Moon. AISA All-Metro honors were bestowed upon seniors, Emily Brooks and Emi Lott, while Georgia Blaze and Maddie Ross both received honorable mention. Knights volleyball continues to be a formidable force among the AISA.
