Macon East Academy students, Rachel Sargent, Lane Johnson, and Tanner Moore attended the Alabama Lions High School Leadership Forum this summer at Troy University.   The purpose of ALHSLF is to build and strengthen leadership, relationships, and the power to serve, among the youth in Alabama. The ALHSLF goals are to give high school students of Alabama an opportunity to strengthen their leadership, organization and service skills, to build relationships, and to network with other leaders, both youth and adult, from across the state. To encourage, motivate and empower youth to return to their communities as advocates for positive change and service through understanding and action based on effective, ethical and compassionate leadership.  The participants enjoyed leadership training, motivational speakers, and a fun trip to Camp Butter and Egg for some exciting team building.

Emi Lott was selected to represent Macon East Academy at this year’s American Legion Girls State.  Sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Alabama Girls State is a premier youth leadership program which offers a one-of-a-kind experience to its delegates. The 77th annual Alabama Girls State was held on the campus of The University of Alabama June 9-14.  During the American Legion Auxiliary Alabama Girls State program, delegates have the opportunity to learn about local and state government through a variety of speakers, workshops, and sessions. The American Legion members and veterans instill a unique understanding of our government and love of country in each participant at Girls and Boys State.  Emi said she enjoyed every part of Girls State, and although she was not elected to office, she became much more confident in public speaking.  She enjoyed participating in mock government among her city and served on several committees for her city and party.

Kayla Boroff and Rachel Sargent, seniors at Macon East Academy, were among 4 students from the Montgomery area selected to attend the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s annual Washington, D.C. Youth Tour.  Representing Dixie Electric Cooperative, the local attending joined 1,500 other students from around the country for a week of learning and fun.  Kayla and Rachel had the opportunity to visit many historic sites while in D.C., meet with legislators, see the working federal government first hand, and attend a performance at the Kennedy Center.  The purpose of the tour is to increase the knowledge of the value of rural electrification among the student leaders and encourage their future involvement in state and national government.  Kayla and Rachel both enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the Youth Tour and continue to serve as leaders among the student body at Macon East Academy.

Jake Wyrosdick represented Macon East Academy at the 82nd annual American Legion Alabama’s Boys State.  The week long event was held at the University of Alabama May 25 – June 1.  Alabama Boys State is one of the highest honors granted to Alabama students. Students from across the state are chosen based on their demonstration of leadership, hard work, strong morals, and motivation in school and community activities. The American Legion believes there is no better way to assure the survival of our republic than to train our young people in the ideals and objectives of American government. By teaching youth to understand and appreciate the basic principles involved in the successful management of a democratic society, we can keep America strong and ensure freedom for future generations. These are the distinguished, long-standing objectives of American Legion Boys States.  During the week at Boy’s State, Jake served as recreation director for his city, was selected to the city council, and served on the rules committee for the Nationalist party.  The delegates enjoyed hearing from outstanding Alabama civic leaders, working alongside the veteran members of the American Legion, and a visit from Coach Nick Saban.

The 36 member Class of 2019 celebrated the completion of their high school days at a commencement ceremony May 20 at First Baptist Church.  Earning over $1.7 million in academic and athletic scholarships, the class was accepted into 40 colleges and universities.  Eight student athletes will continue playing baseball, football, softball, and volleyball at the collegiate level.  Nine students proudly wore the 13+ pin on their robes representing their years at Macon East Academy.  Dawn Johnson addressed the class as Valedictorian, and Isabella Fagan gave the Salutatory address.  We congratulate the Class of 2019!
